INTERVIEW SERIES CONTINUED...K-BETA!!!

Shout out to my main CHUUUNNK, K-BETA, aka Beta Maxxx for the interview...DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS "89-09" MIXTAPE ABOUT TO DROP!!! I got to hear some of the rough cuts the other week, and this is not just any mixtape, this is a hip hop milestone, and will be copied from now on...Act like you know, and you won't look stupid...

CHUUUNK,

-SC-

1.) - Let's get right into it, tell me about the new project "89 to 09"? What's the concept behind it? How is it different from all the other mixtapes out there?

With 89 to 09, I just took a joint from each year and flipped it. It's a nice little ride through the last two decades of rap..and definitely a nod to some of my favorite MCs. Writing it has been a great experience, and I got the big homie DJ Alizay on the cuts for the joint. It hits on 4.28.09..right around the corner.

2.) - When can we expect a full-length from tha gawd, Beta?! Have you been doing any guest spots that we should look for?

I got the album in the can..ready for release in August. We gonna drop this tape, and then hit em with the J-$crilla album - Culture Of Honor - on June 02. After that, I'll be up to bat with my album - Sober. Then we gonna drop Sketch's album produced entirely by J-$crilla. You gotta ask Sketch what he's calling that joint (laughs). The title changes everyday.

As far as collabos, I've been in the lab with some of my peoples around the DMV like Laelo Hood, XO, B. Sheba, Face, SK, Lyriciss, Thad Reid, Pro'Verb, and of course me and Sketch got that Black Irish shit coming. We all on our grind real hard right now, so whenever our paths cross..it's automatic. I'm gonna be doing some work with some other real crazy spitters over the spring and summer.

3.) - Who are you working with on this project, the usual goons? Overok, J-$crilla, etc.?

Yeah of course I'm in the lab with O and $crill heavy. I also got joints with my folks E-Minah of Tha Villenz, Kevlar, Kev Brown, Judah, Marc Nfinit, Charlie Brown and Bad Abbot. The album isn't really feature heavy as far as guest MCs. I got Sketch on a few joints, and my girl Mina is on there singing.

4.) - I see you and Inner Loop Records have been really, branching out, and trying to mobilize different sections of the city, and mobilizing artists within those communities to stand strong and create a movement here? Tell me how are you going about it, what's working/not working?

We just doing our part to bring folks together and make noise out here. It's already happening, and we just a part of the movmenet. Actually, in a lotta ways we are pushing the movement forward with some real ill events and projects like the Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt remix joints. It's just good to contribute to the whole DMV onslaught. I don't really look at what's not working except to come up with ways to make it work yunno. The main thing is just the seperatism in the area. That's gotta go, but yunno we had that shit ingrained in our minds from the slavery days. I think as we continue to progress..we will see the opportunity to defeat and kill that demon and prosper even more.

5.) - After I took a little time off from the scene one of the most visual things I saw, was how many people, and females were out at the last few events I went to, have you noticed this trend that these events and artists are starting to get a little more, popular?

Definitely. I been on the scene since 04, and I notice the growth. Its a blessing for real cuz it means that all the hard work is paying off. It's kinda like the old saying "faith wothout works is dead" from The Bible. We always had faith that we could make it happen, but we knew we had to be on our gate everyday to get that tray. Some of us sleep and let the tray sit in the slot til they take it back (laughs). Inner Loop is up there gettin ours and that's why it's coming to be.

6.) - Besides those closest to you, who are you watching out there in the scene, who is impressing you? Who would you love to work with(locally), that you haven't been able to?

I'm getting familiar with RAtheMC right now. I had to go back and really listen to her tapes man. She is killing it hard right about now. I'm also rocking to that Realmatic joint from my man XO, that dude is just a beast on the visuals and wordplay. Me and him already in the lab though, but I'm checking for that Diamond District joint he got comin with YU and Oddisee. I definitely look forward to working more with all three of those dudes. Other than that, I'm feeling the stuff I'm hearing from AP, Tony Nice, The Package..maaan it's so many bloodthirsty artists in the DMV..got me on my toes out here. I was at The Grind & Lounge out Herndon VA the other night..and it was crazy! Just to feel the hunger and watch cats up there just tear it down. I'm just keeping my ear to the street and listening for that inspiration.

7.) - I understand that you recently shot a video for 28 Days, can you tell me more about that track/video/, etc.?

Yeah that track is about the 28 days I spent in a drug abuse treatment center. It was a real different experience, and I just started writing about it after I talked to $crilla on the phone one day. He was like "You should talk about that shit in a song" and it started coming to me. I wrote it str8 to the air, and he had the right beat for it as soon as I came back from the spot. We did the video with my man Ron H and it came out perfect. Big shout to everybody who came through to be a part of that.

8.) - What is one goal, that you as an artist, and as a person, would like to accomplish this year?

My goal is to keep building Inner Loop Records and BetaRaz Entertainment. Its just progress. We have a lot of goals within goals, and we're all hustling to turn the goals into accomplishments this year. As a person, I'm just taking inventory of myself right now, so I will have to get back to you on that.

9.) - Lastly, what is one thing about yourself, that people do not know, but you would like them to know? Random, I know...

My life is well-documented. Whether it be in the rhymes or on the videos or whatever...I guess if anything...hmmm...I'm a really good cook (laughs). I don't get to do it very often, but when I do, it's always a grand feast.

10.) - Shouts...

Tittsworth Interview from Vinyl Meltdown!

From my man Judgemental, @ Vinyl Meltdown...

-SC-

JM: So how is it touring right now?

Titts: Touring has been amazing fam!! Kicked it off with a massive club opening with Herve, Duke Dumont, Foamo, A1 Bassline and more…. 2000 screaming London kids going in(flicks on the facebook). Since then I’ve had great gigs in Manchester (crazy sold out rave in this abandoned church), Bristol, Edinburgh, Warsaw and then tonight in Brighton, where apparently not even the rain, a holiday week and it being a weekday could stop us! Tomorrow I do this festival that has also booked JackBeats, Atrak and more. Truth be told, it being my first time in Geneva I am REALLY looking forward to the cheese and chocolate J Then it’s off to London again for a second time with DNB legend Shy Fx. It’s been a killer couple of weeks to say the least. I had a polish girl say the grilled out Sponge Bob on my shirt looks like a “nigger.” I started djing with earplugs for the first time. I’ve been turned onto dinosaur porn and multi-limb fantasy sex. I tweeted about my morning wood experience on the train. I did a remix in my hotel room for Steve Aoki. In short, it’s been epic, folk!

JM: I know we last met up in DC, which is both of our hometown and the show was nuts. What kind of reaction do you usually get here? Especially since your music is definitely more B-more than DC.

Titts: Fam, I don’t even know what my music is anymore. Bits of it are B-more, bits are DC, bits aren’t even American, whether UK inspired or wherever else I may visit. I get a lot of love in DC tho, which I think is important. I put my heart into my sets and try to get a good reaction wherever I go but I always want to make sure that the city that started it for POPS OFF!!! Gigs at 930 Club w/ Will Eastman have been ridiculous. Lately we’ve been experimenting a bit w/ Ibiza as well.

JM: And touring internationally, what are the crowds like in different cities, especially with such a region-specific genre?

Titts: You really have to pay close attention to how crowds react. What kind of music are they used to? What genre? What time period? How commercial/underground? How aggressive? What speed? Sometimes you start the night compromising and if all goes well, by the end you’re playing what you want to play. Sometimes you just go in full force and they love every minute of it! I learned all this from DC… whether I was playing at Wonderland or EyeBar, Buzz @ Capital Ballroom or the DC Tunnel, I would learn how to get in and out of different crowds and different genres. It helps to be versatile when you’re trying to push something sometimes unfamiliar.

JM: Ok, so lets talk about the record, Twelve Steps… First of all, it’s a great album. And its spawned a few great singles and EPs, got great reviews from lots of people, myself included, so I just wanted to first of all say congratulations for that.

Titts: Thanks fam! It’s my first attempt as a proper album, so that really means a lot for me.

JM: But how did the transition from DJing and Remixing to original production go for you? Was it natural, or different than you expected?

Titts: Honestly, it wasn’t easy. It meant taking a lot of time off and focusing in the studio and I feel that 12 Steps was my just cracking that door open. All of a sudden I couldn’t depend on samples or familiar elements to carry me. Plus to be respected as a producer, I needed to step my game up past edits and blog quality DJ tools. I am very excited to say that it’s finally starting to come together for me… or least it feels like it. I’m still jumping leaps and bounds, almost every few months it seems.

JM: Your background is Drum n Bass and Hip Hop stuff… did that help you at all going into the solo production, and working with the people you worked with?

Titts: Everything has been coming together so nicely. DNB taught me a bit about breaks and bass, hiphop about sampling. Plus the people I’ve encountered, esp in DC have had a great influence on me. DC bands, DNB producers and friends like Matt Nordstrom, Costas Nakasis and Dave Nada to name a few.

JM: How did you manage to get everyone from Pitbull and Nina Sky to Kid Sister and Pase Rock, to the Federation on the album and still keep it so cohesive?

Titts: I think that club really helped to keep it together. Everything is loosely club inspired and has a similar feel rhythmically and tempo wise. The approach of how I view and build sets also helped me out too. I tried to maintain a certain vision and goal as well I suppose.

JM: Twelve Steps sounds like a reference to some type of rehab… Is it a reference to that, or just a pun about dancing, or what?

Titts: It’s a reference to how much of a drunken mess I was when Stretch Armstrong first asked me to put together an album!! I’m not in the program or anything (90% of the steps are way too religious for me) but this album comes from a time where I am trying to leave less of my life to chance and take control of things.

JM: Over the past couple of years you’ve lost like 100 pounds, and actually I guess the album title is somewhat in reference to that… what made you decide to make that change and how has that effected you?

Titts: I had to go thru so much sh*t before I finally took action. I was getting abdominal pains from drinking, I was hospitalized for chest pains from other activities, I was getting in trouble with the law… I was just an all around mess, physically and mentally. As corny as it sounds, putting a lot of effort into music kept me out of trouble… and then seeing the progress made would help reinforce that and keep me further and further from trouble.

JM: The album artwork is dope. But I’m not sure I get it. I mean obviously the numbers, and like the highest combo with dice is 12, but what else? You’re not into numerology like the Wu or anything are you? Is there any kind of secret message in the dice?

Titts: The numbers themselves don’t mean anything. We started once to get on some nerd ish but decided just to let it represent random chance.

JM: When you come into a DJ set, do you have stuff sort of mapped out with a little bit of breathing room, is it a totally rehearsed set, or is it all of the top of the dome?

Titts: I have things I want to accomplish and a rough idea of how I want to approach things but my general strategy is just to be well organized and prepare to go wherever it needs to go.

JM: I know you try to incorporate a good amount of your own production/remixes into your DJ sets, while also not completely taking over the show… how do you find the right balance there?

Titts: One teaches you a lot about the other. Every time I get back from Europe or Australia, I’ll run home and bang out a whole bunch of new tracks. It’s a fine line because you want to travel enough to stay inspired and encounter new things musically. However you want to stay home long enough to put those ideas down and release them.

JM: So I know that you’re real close with some of the Fools Gold crew and obviously you had Kid Sister on the record, and A-trak helped you get in touch with Nina Sky… any chance you’ll be jumping on that ship? Or is Plant music a comfortable place for you at the moment?

Titts: I will do another album for Plant but in the meantime I’m doing all sorts of stuff.. just did a remix for AC Slater, another for Steve Aoki.. I’m all about keeping the options open and keeping music fun.

Blu & Exhile, Ardamus, Flex Mathews & Friends @ Liv Nightclub...

Well, it happened…DC decided to give the much-hyped about West Coast duo, Blu & Exile a warm reception, and come out in full-force to support the local luminaries opening the show that night…This is a rare feat, that I have seen going the way of the dinosaur in my city…Years ago, it was pulling-teeth to get people(let alone females) out to a hip hop show, especially on a weeknight(Tuesday), and it usually turns into a “weaknight”…*Ahem*…Anyway, over the past few years, DC hip hop has been on the rise, and now is no exception…Shows are getting thrown in all area’s of the District, not just venues in NW, different crowds, demographics and artists are mingling, and their local/national popularity, is ever-increasing…

I hadn’t been inside the legendary Bohemian Caverns on 11th and U Street, in years…The landmark on the corner, actually houses three business’: The Caverns in the basement, a restaurant on the middle-floor, and Club Liv on the second floor…I hadn’t been up there, since the good people at Organized Theory threw a party with a Cage and Yak Ballz 4 years ago, it had changed a lot…The stage was new, closer to the ground, wider, and on the opposite side of the room from where it had been…New wallpaper covered the walls, a small VIP area had been set-up, and that annoying rise in the middle of the dance floor had been removed…With these new observations swirling about me, I realized I was rocking to the sounds of one of the city’s premier DJ’s/beatmakers, Damu the Fudge Munk…From his musical selections, to the fact that he doesn’t use Serato, Damu keeps it classic with crates and 2 Technics at every function, guaranteed to the turn the party out with a doubt… Dj Underdog, owner and proprietor of famed, hypebeast- hangout Major, came on the wheels, and dropped in some reggae gems in-between Damu’s cuts…With that being said, Ardamus was about to set the tone for the evening…

I just copped Ardamus’ When Nothing Goes Right LP, and was excited to see him perform some of the material live…I hadn’t seen him perform in awhile, and he was completely undaunted by the packed room of fans, and fellow musicians…He ripped through “Superdrugs”, “When Nothing Goes Right”, and “Drinksmoke” off of the LP…He brought up Double-Plus, the other have of Ardamus’ side project, Ardaplus and they did a track together…He also brought up Keyote to rip through the DJ Eurok produced DMV anthem, “The District”…By the time Ardamus’ set was done, the crowd had been thoroughly warmed up, and introduced to some of the cities most formidable hip hop talent…Sweaty and breathless, he left the stage in spinters…

After a short intermission allowing spectator’s to catch their breath, DC’s own “Handsome Grandson” Flex Mathews, took the stage…Realizing how Ardamus set the tone earlier, Flex was not shy, and immediately made plans to win the crowd over by throwing out 15-20 Easter eggs with candy inside to them…Once the bribe was completed, Flex tore into a energetic rendition of his show staple, “Rookie Of The Year”…Following that with a freestyle session, that included him rapping about items that the crowd passed to him…From iPhones, to condoms, and batteries, to dollar bills, Flex cannot be stopped and always hits his punch…Flex spread the love to 3 of the area’s most, up-and-coming artists, and deferred his remaining five minutes of show time to bring on DC heavyweights, Lyriciss, Pro’Verb and X.O. to perform their smash, “We Go Hard”…This was vintage Flex, this wasn’t planned either…All three of them came to the show for support, and happened to have a cd with the instrumental on it, and they got up and rocked with Flex’s co-sign…That joint bangs!

Needless to say, Blu and Exile were going on with the crowd at their zenith…Unfortunately, things kinda slip downhill after this point…It took about 20-25 minutes to bring them on, Exile’s MPC and turntables kept going out, because people were all over the stage and stepping on the cable…Later, the sound became atrocious and sounded really, tinny and distorted, due to a blown monitor…Forgetting these minor inconveniences, what about Blu and Exile, right? Well, I really wanted to check the show out, because I wanted to see if Blu was going to perform as boring as he sounds on his records…Don’t get me wrong, I like his material, his beat selection is awesome and unique, his content is dope, etc. etc. But, he’s monotone, doesn’t flip his cadence up, come up with interesting themes/topics, or hooks…He’s a good rapper, that’s about it…He doesn’t move much, doesn’t talk to the crowd much, although he had good things to say, and bigged up the acts prior to him…After a couple of songs and about 30 photos, I moved to the back of the room to catch a beer and people watch, because I knew my photo’s were not going to improve, …Even though the emcee was lackluster, Exile killed it with his MPC/DJ routine he did at the end of the show…

With all that being said, it was a good night in our Nation’s Capital and showed a full-house, and a group from the West Coast, that the DC hip hop scene is on the rise and must be recognized!

DC ARTIST/GRAMMY NOMINATED KOKAYI SIGNS TO QN5 RECORDS!

MAD PROPS!

New York City Independent hip hop label, QN5 Music, has signed Washington, DC’s Grammy-nominated emcee/singer/producer, Kokayi, to its official stable of innovative artists and producers.
Pronounced “Ko-Kah-Yee” (or KOKE for short), this 202-native takes his name from the Swahili word meaning “to summon the people”. Musically self-sufficient and versatile in ways that the QN5 roster is known for, he produces his own music, writes his own rhymes, sings from the gut and is self-taught on several instruments.
A prime example of QN5’s New Hip Hop aesthetic, Kokayi joins the label as an in-house producer and artist who will release the sophomore follow-up to his independently released 2007 debut Mass Instructions. On his own, he’s already managed to tour the world and snag the aforementioned Grammy nod for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his collaboration with vocalist Wayna.
What’s equally impressive, is his prolific output. Kokayi is keeping busy on multiple fronts with appearances on forthcoming QN5-releases as well as several side-projects already in the works – including a joint-project with producer Sharkey entitled Dastardly and a full-length project with his Afropunk band, The Caesarz. This high level of productivity goes a long way to prove his self-proclaimed mantra of “Less Talk, More Walk”.
“Honestly I pour everything out on a song. It allows me to free myself from any inhibitions,” Kokayi says of his approach to music. “If I can move people that say they don’t like hip hop, than I know my job is done.”
“I’ve always been extremely proud of the roster I’ve assembled under the QN5 banner and I’m highly selective of who we work with – but when I heard Kokayi’s Mass Intructions album, I was floored,” says QN5 label founder, Tonedeff. “This is a cat who seamlessly blends genres without so much as flinching and brings his own unique sound, slang and vibe to the table. His talent won’t allow him to play by the rules, so QN5 is definitely the perfect place for him.”
