Panacea Interview!!!
K-Murdock, one-half of DC's own, Panacea was nice enough to take a few minutes and discuss the past, present, and future, of one of the area's most respected duo's...
Panacea is based out of the Washington DC area where producer K-Murdock, a Maryland native, has provided his fantasy hip-hop soundscapes for soul singers such as Raheem DeVaughn and Wes Felton (aka "The Crossrhodes").
Emcee Raw Poetic, a long time resident of Northern Virginia who originally hails from Philadelphia, has been rhyming since the age of 14. His natural, almost conversational flow and signature storytelling lyrics fit perfectly with K-Murdock's soulful and sometimes spacey compositions.
Their obvious chemistry is incredibly rare, and favors such accomplished duos as Gangstarr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Whether they're in the studio composing music or on stage performing live, Panacea has all musical bases covered!
1.) - Peace peace, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for me...I actually, originally tracked you all down a few years ago, when I was working on an unreleased DC hip hop documentary, called Metrospective...With that out of the way, are you guys working with anyone from the area still? I remember seeing you all with RPM a couple of times, w/ Damu on the wheels, s**t was bananas...
All good man, our pleasure, we seldom do interviews so its always nice to convey what we got cookin in the kitchen, lol! U mentioned Damu, he's like the 3rd secret member of Panacea as he does ALL the cuts and scratches on r stuff and i gotta make sure he gets his shine as he helps make the albums more dope! Outside of him, locally we have have features on our record from close friends of mine like Wes Felton and Raheem Devaughn who all very locally known and revered. plus ,r band who featured heavy on the Scenic Route was from all over the area, mostly Va but thats still the DMV!
2.) - Besides the artists you just mentioned, who from around the DMV are you watching right now?
The cats i really have taken a liking too are also from VA, they go by the name of the Five One Band, go google them NOW (or after u read this, lol). Those 4 guys have so much energy on stage and a unique sound that remind sme of the eclecticism in the RPM guys as they fuse hip-hop with reggae, electro pop, rock and can even jazz it out... very talented and they will be makign cameos on the next Panacea record as well... and actually we just did a few shows with them that got good feedback so we'll see how that works out in the future! Other than that, im just waiting to hear more from Wale and see if he;s the great hope people r anticipating from the DMV.
3.) - I feel that artists like Panacea, Low Budget Crew(Oddisee, Kaimbr, Kev Brown, Cy Young, Roddy Rod, etc.), Educated Consumers, Guns N Butter, Wale, Tabi, etc. are the reason a lot of people are starting to pay more attention to DC, how do you feel about that?
I hope so, cuz this generation got a lot of consistentcy comign out of it as far as artist go, EC been puttign it down since the early part of the decade, i remember Seezmics back from when i was in college at Howard Univ and i woul go over to UMD to see my boy, and listen to UMUC and hear him Seezmics, Haysoos, Kev Brown all on my man PMD aka Peter Rosenburg's show, From Dusk till Dawn! i miss those days... but i digress, yeah, lol, all that to say is that we been doing it for awhile so im glad its gettin some shine finally... and for su to be part of the movement is a blessing!
4.) - There has been a huge surge of go-go influenced, and dance influenced hip hop being produced now, within the past 5 years...Baltimore club music is on the rise, and so are a lot of their artists, both of these phenomenons can be linked in a way, to Wale...Do you think this is true? What do you think about the electronic/dance hip hop music being created?
Personally, i think its bigger than Wale, i think if anything he has brought attention to it because he's very buzz heavy right now and uses it in his music, but its the guys who produce him that have jus tas much as an influence n that as him too, but like i wrote above im glad its gettin shine. its like once a decade go-go appears on a mainstream level that captures radio across america... in the 80s/90s in was EU doin the butt or kid n play's song! then even Jill Scott had the go-go pocket break in her hit"Its Love" off her first album and now we got an actual DC hip-hoppper with go-go rhythms, it only took 20 years, lol! i have neevr been one to use it in Panacea's sound, but i def find my stuff getting more electro fused! and i love it, but i also love incorporating samples into it too,!
5.) - Would you try your hand at this style, or are you strictly set in your ways?
As for Panacea, the style sonically is usually based on whatever im listening too or sampling, so it varies.... the last album i was heavy into c-jazz and 80s electro pop like Scritti Politti but this next record i have been all over the place and found my beats having a worldly feel, we'll see... thats part of the fun of creation.
6.) - Getting back to the city, does DC have a sound? Is it go-go? Jazz/Soul/R&B/Blues samples? Is it biting NY?
DC is most known endemically for the go-go sound but we have famous singers, songwriters, musicians, and hopefully soon t be hiphop artist :) emanate from here too! Its funny the level of talent hat is here but sometimes the homegrowns have to venture out to be exposed... for us, r plans for Panacea were neevr to be on some we want to be known as DC artists, we wanna be known across the globe and universe as progressive hiphop artist foremost who happened to be from the DMV, and by all means i will always call DC home, cuz thats what it is, even beyond music.
And i def dont think we r biting NY, or the south, or wherever! We, like them, have are own identity, its just that people outside of the city are seeing it revealed and the dope thing is, being as mixed as the city is becoming, the music is reflected thus the DMV will prolly be known for being a launchpad of lotsa dope music, not just "this genre" or "that" (hopefully).
7.) - Either way, Panacea is gonna keep it movin', what's next for you two? Touring? New records? Solo joints? More beat battles?(I was at the Red Bull amalagamation)...
Touring is crucial, so if u wanna see us, lets make it work, lol... and always count on an album EVERY YEAR, the one we got on deck is shaping up to be amazing! plus, i got a boatload of solo projects that i'll be releasing this year, and most of it is FREE, the plan is to expand and catch more ears so we can use the music to take us around the world and spread that good vibe!
OH! i'll def be at the next Red Bull Big Tune, i wish i had gone further but it is what it was, lol!
8.) - Shouts?!
To my partner in rhyme, Raw P whose busy writing more verses as well as Damu, al the guys from al lthe bands that have backed us... RPM to the Five One! And shouts to the fans for always supporting us and showing love! Peace!

DC artist Imani K. Brown Feature!!!
Art Whino Artist Imani Brown Interviewed by the examiner.com
The average Washingtonian-Urbanite sees examples of “Urban Art” daily. In a city where abstract sculptures occupy front lawns and political burners (graffiti) grace the third stories of “low rise buildings,” urban art is right in front of our eyes. But in the hustle and bustle of our day, we seldom get a chance to look at the person next to us. If we did, we may notice that Urban Art is even closer than we think,
Imani K. Brown is one of the newest and brightest artists dealing with the medium of “mobile urban art.” As a photographer, established tattoo artist, and lead designer for Artistic Sole Custom Kicks, Brown works everyday to take art from the traditional canvas to the hands and feet of her community; literally.
A native Washingtonian and a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Brown’s influences range from French-feminine artist Fafi to political artist Aniekan Udofia. “Art all comes back to communication. {for example} Hip-Hop was formed because young people had a voice that needed to be heard.” Artists are part of a culture with a story to be heard, said Brown. “Urban Art was born from Hip-Hop.”
Brown, like most urban Artists, grew up with an appreciation of sneakers. An appreciation heavily influenced the music. Thanks to songs like, Run-DMC’s “My Adidas” and lyrics from MC Lyte,” we chit and we chat about this and that, from sneakers to hats,” sneakers quickly became an icon of Hip-Hop culture. Though Hip-Hop has since evolved, Hip-Hop’s obsession with the “freshest kicks” has not diminished. Brown’s art takes that obsession to another level, customizable.
While working as a tattoo apprentice in 2006, Brown decided that she needed to find a new medium to communicate. “Carrying canvases back and forth to the shop was too much and I needed something small if I wanted to work inside the shop,” said Brown.
Brown was later inspired by a travelling urban art exhibit, Sneaker Pimps, to paint the “soles” of Hip-Hop. By using one of Hip-Hop’s icons, she now communicates a world of expression with the “movement” of feet. Three years after the first brush to sole, she is now “artistically destroying s#@t in a city near you,” at an unprecedented pace. At around $220 a pair, these uniquely designed kicks have beenfeatured in publications and shows from DC to Australia. In addition, she manages to imprint her body art on around a hundred people a month, at Pinz-N-Needlez Tattoo.
Now, with the help of a small team of devoted artisans, including her “muse” and “propaganda” manager Jarmel Dixon, she is quickly becoming a “pretty big deal,” in the Urban Art world. From trunk shows at Crystal Couture in Crystal City, VA to her upcoming solo exhibit at City of Ink in Atlanta, Brown is making her mark and telling the story of urban culture to the masses.

Interiew Series Continued - Zaire!
I stumbled across the homey, Zaire while watching one of the latest video's, from a talented videographer from VIMBY.COM...I reached out to dude over myspace, and noticed that he was from the same city I went to school in...Check out the homey from the Mid-West, but holding down both coasts, from VA-to-the-Bay, and everything in-between...Ladies and gentleman, Zaire...
1.) - Peace Zaire, Flyer's stand-up! First a few formalities: Where are you from?
Sup fam? I was born right downtown at Miami Valley Hospital man. Grew up in Dayton mostly, right off of Salem Ave and those areas. Later on, we moved to Trotwood and finished up high school out there, but Dayton is home. Pops was in the military so we moved around from time to time (VA, New Orleans, ATL), but ended up back in Dayton in my late teenage years,
2.) - Most emcee's like to take a different route when picking their alias', why Zaire?
Mainly, it's a nod to family and shedding the slave/Christian mentality and naming of my ancestors. I decided to use it as my production alias cuz it's a little different, and for bonus points, girls like it, so It's a win win situation lol. But yeah, it's a name with meaning; rebelling against institutions in place that I don't agree with ect.
3.) - Is there any hip hop scene in Dayton? Ohio?
I don't think the scene for hip hop in Dayton is all that extensive but there is def some thangs going down in the City. For instance, I'm second cousins with one of the biggest rappers in city, Chaos Tha Community Serva of D-Cut/First Fam Ent. He does his thing REALLY big and its and he's an official product of Dayton. Other than that, I don't know what really goes on in the city... I've been gone from Dayton (currently residing in Newport News, VA) for about 7 years, so I don't really have a pulse on DYT like I want.
4.) - What was the catalyst that made you listen to the old adage, "GO WEST YOUNG MAN"?
Well, I did a 6 year sentence in the Air Force and started getting into some dj'n/beatmaking with some cats from the westcoast. As most folks know, Dayton, hell, Ohio in general was an important catalyst for a lot of funk and westcoast sound. As I started gettin down on beats and learning the tricks of the trade via online message boards ect, I connected with my production partner Keelay out in the Bay Area and he taught me a few thangs about this music and its been a wrap ever since. Even though I stay in VA right now, I travel out to the Bay Area on a constant basis. I love the West though...interestingly enough it reminds me of Dayton, just a lil bit more colorful lol.
5.) - What is your hip hop birthday, what made you fall in love with this, with music etc.? Word to Krayola on the Hip Hop Birthday reference!
Man for real, the first time I heard Slum Village's 'Look of Love' I was on some other shit. I knew then and there that this was the kind of music I wanted to create. I always had a love for that smoove shit, and that's the only type of groove I used to mess with when I first started, but yeah, listenin to some Dilla had me infatuated with this music.
6.) - How did you get linked up with such talented folks as, Keelay, VIMBY, Supastition, illmind, Blu, etc.?
As I stated earlier, I met Keelay through the production board at www.ughh.com back in 03. I was just learnin the game and heard Keelay stuff, as well as my other production partner J.Fish and was just wowed at what they could do behind the boards. We traded beats via online and just admired eachothers style and decided to link up and the rest was history. Also, it just so happens that on that same production board, Illmind was a young superstar, prolly my favorite beatmaker on that site at the time. Ughh has a crazy history because we all started off there and now we're all making moves in the same circles. Of course, Illmind is the most successful, but we regularly kick it with him and go to his events ect.
Kam Moye aka Supastition is signed to the label Keelay & I are on, Myx Music Label (www.myxmusiclabel.com). He is one of the best emcees I've ever heard ya know, one of those cats who NEVER have a wack verse lol. But we get down with him on tracks all the time.
Blu is a VERY DOPE emcee that we got a chance to work with on our album titled 'Ridin High' dropping on March 10 this year. The lead single for this album is called 'The Times' and featured Blu, our homies Fortilive (Illmind, Mushmouf,& Slo-Mo), and Nino Moschella. We shot a video for this single and it was a huge success, getting regular burn on MTV Jams and many internet outlets ect. It was cool working with that cat Blu, and now I see he just got signed to a major, so thangs are working out for everyone.
And we linked up with VIMBY through our HOMIE Tunji (shouts to Inverse for real!). They've been down since day one, and Tunji also has a great song called 'Addicts For Real' featured on our album 'Ridin High'. He's a talented cat and actually got to meet him in L.A. for a video shoot for our next single 'Alright With Me'. Dayum I feel like a used car salesman talkin about this album lol.
7.) - What's next for you? Please don't say you have a band now and are about to do that route? J/k, but seriously?
Well, Keelay & I are heading to Austin for the SXSW music conference to promote our album and play a couple shows with our homies (who happen to be a band lol) The Park. Other than that, we'll probably do a few mini tours on the upper westcoast on down, and hopefully do some overseas tours ect. We got an exciting year ahead of us, and we both still got day jobs lol. Im waitin for the day I can dragon punch my boss out his silly ass mustache. Im talkin bout with the fierce punch too.
8.) - You probably get a lot of it out in Cali, but what do you think of the new dance/ravewave/hiphop scene takin ahold of everyone? Will this last, or is it a fad, like Papa Roach and Saliva rock/rap?
I think nowadays, fads come in and out really quick. I mean, there's always gonna be something cookie cut for kids and the 'safe' demographic to make some dough, but at the same time, I think the scale is tipping towards the artists instead of the machine that pushes out that 'safe' material. And by safe I mean guaranteed to make money. But to tell ya the truth, I really don't care about all that...most people are gonna like what is fed to em, but the heads will like what they like period. I don't even know what Saliva Rock is tho lol.
9.) - Lastly, who's impressing you right now, and who would you do a joint with based on that?
Man I'm feelin a lot of aggressive emcees these days like Elzhi & Freeway, also really feelin Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Phonte of Little Brother. Production wise, I really like Just Blaze's work all the time, Hi-Tek is RETARDED, Illmind of course, Jake One, Vitamin D, and Battlecat mos def. There is just so much good music out there and I don't know why folks say hip hop is dead...there is QUALITY stuff out there.
10.) - Shouts...
Word shouts One Viisiion for the opportunity to talk candidly lol, and major shouts to my hometown Dayton, Ohio cuz I'm tryin to rep for yall hard in my own way feel me. Def shouts to my homie Keelay and the rest of my squad The Sole Vibe, and a major shout to our label, Myx Music Label. We got a lot of thangs planned for this year, and that's not the clichéd 'watch out for my team' bit, it's the real deal. Thanks again fam!!!

Armed Man Arrested On Capitol Hill?!
The Hill has the story of an arrest by U.S. Capitol police this afternoon of a man who police say had several weapons in his car. The suspect's car was searched after he stopped to ask an officer for directions, and the officer noticed something suspicious about the man's vehicle. But get this: he was arrested at 3rd street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW for allegedly possessing two long guns, three handguns, and a sword in his vehicle. Regular readers will recall that this is the second arrest of an armed man with a sword near the Capitol in just over a year. Is Congress under clandestine attack by Samurai? DCist will be sure to report on any and every sword-related arrest from here on out.

An Intimate Interview w/ the Drunken Dragon, aka Louis Logic
WIKIPEDIA MAKES JOURNALIST'S/PSUEDO-JOURNALISTS, LAZY!
Louis Logic is a New York City based underground hip-hop MC. He is a former member of the Demigodz, appearing on a number of tracks on their first album. He has also released albums as a solo artist, and as The Odd Couple with Jay Love. He has recently made his arrangement with longtime producer J.J. Brown official; his most recent album was released under the artist name "Louis Logic & J.J. Brown."
He first became interested in hip-hop at the age of eleven when he was exposed to U.T.F.O.'s hit "Roxanne, Roxanne". By his own admission, lyrical talent did not come naturally to him, and he has cited Vinnie Paz (formerly Ikon the Verbal Hologram) for the name which has become Logic's moniker, 'The Drunken Dragon.' In 2002, the Demigodz The Godz Must Be Crazy EP was released, featuring Logic on a number of tracks.
Louis Logic's solo career took off in 2003 with the release of Sin-A-Matic, which was met with critical acclaim and widespread underground success. In 2004 he withdrew from the Demigodz, citing that his association with the group was overshadowing his solo career, and the fact that his music was developing in a very different direction from the style which made him comfortable with the Godz, who generally value traditional battle-style rhyming over innovation. He stressed that the rift was not a bitter one, and that he remains on good terms with the Demigodz, particularly Celph Titled, with whom he remains personally close. However, in 2005 Louis Logic made an appearance on long time Demigodz affiliate Majik Most's debut album "Molesting HipHop (released on Domination Recordings). The song entitled "Chicks Don't Mind" was produced by JJ Brown - Logic's primary producer and close friend.
Although he released Alcohol/Ism later that year as The Odd Couple with Jay Love, his departure from the Demigodz also marked a retreat from collaborative work. His 2006 album with J.J. Brown, Misery Loves Comedy features no cameos at all by other rappers, although a singer was brought in for one track. Misery Loves Comedy was Logics first release on his new label, Fatbeats Records.
In September 2006, Louis and J.J. released their first music video for the single "The Great Divide." The video was directed by Jed I. Rosenberg.
here you go:
I ll give an intro about you, so we can bypass all those questions and get to what you are up to, now...
1.) - Tell me about the concept behind your new project, Spork Kills? Who are the participants, and how did you all meet/come together?
Are we doing real answers? Laust Jeppesen, and I met at a Socialists for Surf Reform Sewing Circle meeting aka at a studio session in lovely Copenhagen. I was hired to rap on a beat by a production duo called Tue Track and Peder for the 3rd Nobody Beats the Beats album. NBTB is a popular collective of hip hop producers in Copenhagen and Laust and his production partner and lifelong friend Rolf Hede have been members since the inception. Lausts engineered my Tue Track and Peder session and we got along so well I began to wonder I wasn’t working with his production. I asked him to play me some of his stuff and realized that I had actually met him about 2 years earlier while passing through Copenhagen on tour when I recognized the exclusive Black Thought verse he had for this particular song. We made plans to get together the next time I passed through Copenhagen but I love musing about how he never thought he’d hear from me again. I called him maybe a year later from the home of a beautiful redheaded Danish girl I was spending tons of money visiting. We linked up at his and Rolf’s studio and I met Rolf for the first time. We made a song from scratch with no samples in less than 2 hours and I knew we had an unusual chemistry. I never thought 2 short years later, I’d be innovating my own career with a Surf Rap record. Life is weird.
2.) - Do you feel that a lot of emcees, performer's, other artists are using more bands, more rock-based samples, and putting out project's using current rock-radio hits?
I don’t know. Are they? I’m not much into what other mc’s are doing. I have a few new favs but mostly, I’m a big indie rock and singer/songwriter head. I do hear a lot of talk about how everyone thinks they need a band now. My philosophy on that is if it isn’t adding something unique and tasteful to what you do as a hip hop artist, then adding a band is just for show. Save yourself a few bucks and wear a costume or something.
The difference between what I’ve been doing with my band and what most rappers do, as I see it, is that we’re not just replicating what I used to with a producer, only with a band. I’ve also been studying piano and theory for the past 3 years so I can actually participate in the writing and playing of these songs. It’s not just me standing in front of a bunch of guys who replaced my DJ. We are actually a synthesized band. Hahaha. I make us sound like we were grown in a laboratory or that we all have feathered hair and quasi-futuristic clothes. We do by the way.
3.) - What were some of your influences and inspirations for making this record?
Ok.. I’ll make a list. The Ventures, Talking Heads, Tonedeff, Rufus Wainwright, Homeboy Sandman, The Kinks, LCD Soundsystem, The Shins, Mike Patton and anything he does, Beirut, The Beatles, The Office (Not at the senior center where I work. The show. Although I don’t watch it. My girlfriend does.), My girlfriend, Copenhagen, Emil Jeppesen (Laust’s little brother and Spork Kills trumpet player), Ayn Rand, Zodiac, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Exorcist. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Tight pants. Saag Paneer. This doesn’t make any sense any more. Ah well.
4.) - Do you see hip hop, rock, dance, club, etc. just fusing into one, amalgamation of music?
Damn! I guess that is what’s happening. Should I be concerned about that or happy? You don’t have to answer that. You’re interviewing me right? Sure.
5.) - What I mean is, there are a lot of hybrid-bands/groups/solo artists, out there that don't know what they are:punk, glam, rap, hiphop, hipster, indie, etc. etc. Kind of reminds me of the rock/rap/metal phase that happened in the late 90's, early 2000's...
Oh wow! I remember that! Now, I am getting concerned! I think there was a lot of really silly and awful stuff that happened as a consequence of that marketing scheme gone awry. Still, I suppose I had a little bit of a softspot for the Judgment Night Soundtrack. Del and Dinosaur Jr.!!! What!?!

What!?!

Bank Robbery, Obama, and Free Cupcakes in Bethesda?
Good looks from the people over aet DCist.com...
Robbery, Obama, and Cupcakes: One Exciting Day In Bethesda
2009_0307_Bethesda at Night.jpg
Photo of Bethesda by sintixerr.
Whilst enjoying a few beers and the weather with friends yesterday, the conversation wiggled its way towards drinking establishments in Bethesda, D.C.'s friendly borough/township/indefinable blob of offices and residences to the north. Personally -- and, of course, this is opinion at best -- I've got nothing against Bethesda on the whole, but there's certainly no gravitational pull marching me closer to the inner Montgomery County suburban area. Sure, there's a couple of bars, a restaurant here or there, and it's certainly Metro-accessible, but really, it's just kind of...there.
But if Bethesda has more action-packed days like yesterday, I might have to change my predisposition towards other, closer-in destinations. Not only was there a bank robbery -- foiled by customers and employees, no less! -- but Barack Obama rolled into town for a parent-teacher conference at Sidwell Friends right around the corner. Then a whole bunch of people got free cupcakes! (Take that, other area municipalities!)
First, the robbery: according to multiple sources, a District man held up the Bank of America at 7316 Wisconsin Avenue yesterday -- apparently for the second time in less than a month. (The man also had a warrant out for a robbery he committed at the same branch on February 13). After he demanded cash and absconded with currency in hand, two bank employees and one customer pursued on foot -- not exactly a police-recommended tactic, but definitely ballsy as all get out -- tackling the man two blocks away. The robber was eventually arrested and the money was returned.
Oh, but there's more! At the same time, the Prez's motorcade arrived but a couple blocks away for a meeting at Sidwell Friends' satellite campus, assumedly about young Sasha's academic performance -- although one can hardly blame Sasha's teacher if she had the ulterior motive of wanting an audience with the Obamas. (Hey, maybe it was to thank them for the extra drink or two per paycheck that the newly passed economic stimulus will provide us worker bees. Since reporters weren't allowed inside, I suppose we'll never know.) To top off the busy afternoon, there were treats distributed: Takoma-based blog Redline reports that those who were anxious to get a wave in towards Obama got some free tasty morsels from an intrepid local bakery.
Brazen citizen vigilance, visits from one of the world's most popular world leaders, and free cupcakes? Geez, Bethesda's lookin' up.

QN5 Music & DC's own: Substantial!
1.) - Being born and raised in the DMV, how did you link up with indie-mainstays, QN5?
I first moved to NYC in '97. A friend of mine introduced me to Pack FM, then a few years later Pack introduced me to Tonedeff who knew Session. We did a track called The Evil That
Pens Do and we've been fam ever since.
2.) - Aside from having a family, a regular job, being a musician, etc. how do you find time to tour, make music video's, teach youth, spend time with the fam, record new material, network, etc.?!
Time Management. It's definitely difficult and at times stressful but it's all worth it.
3.) - What is your profession, and how did you get into it?
Outside of pursuing music, I do youth work. I first got into it by volunteering at local High Schools & Middle Schools, speaking to kids about about various career paths. The next thing knew I was doing youth work full time.
4.) - With having all of these responsibilities, you seem to be very successful at accomplishing all these goals aforementioned...Musically, you are one of the few artists from the area that get's to tour, make music video's that air on MTV, and record with some of the games most formidable talent...What are you doing differently, that enables you to do these things?
I don't know for sure. But one thing I do is constantly put in work and learn to adapt. When others took breaks for whatever reason, I pushed forward. Although things were very different in the biz when I first started, I managed to keep up to the best of my ability and kept people around me who could spot the changes/trends when I couldn't.
5.) - What's up with the Japan situation, how did all of that come about?
I was discovered by a Japanese producer named Nujabes back in '99. After putting out my first solo album and doing several other collabos, I managed to build a very strong following there. You can peep the full story on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK3A36eGj0U
6.) - When is your next video dropping for, "My Favorite Things"? Where can we see it, and big ups to the director, that kid is nice...
It's actually dropping Monday, March 9th. It will be debuting all across the web next week. Keep checking back at QN5.com for it's television debut. Matt Hobbs (www.vitalfilms.net) directed the new video. That kid is truly amazing.
7.) - Within the last couple of years, DC has been getting a lot more positive attention, do you think that this recent appeal is manifesting itself in more industries, than politics? What I mean is, do you feel that the art world, music scene, restaurant/foodie scene, etc. are getting a lot more media attention, and more people are turning to DC for talent?
Yeah, I definitely think so. More and more people are starting to pay attention to what's going on here outside of politics. DC has always had influence, now it's starting to step into the national/international spotlight even more.
8.) - For example, Kokayi (www.myspace.com/kokayi) was nominated for Grammy's this year, and you were in the running, tell me about that?!
Well my man Kokayi got the official nomination with another DMV artist, Wayna. I was came close, maybe next year. That was definitely a good look regardless. It's too much talent here to be ignored.
9.) - With all of these accomplishments, what do you still feel like you have to do in life?
There's always room for improvement. There are still a lot of places I haven't toured and even more people who haven't discovered my music. I'll never reached everyone or see every stage and as long as that's the case, I still have a lot of work to do.
10.) - Shouts...
Well first, thank you for the continued support, shout out to the DMV, QN5 Music, My UV Ink fam/God's Illa, and all of my family, fans and supporters worldwide. Peace.
